Julio Alsogaray from Argentina won the 10th Laser Midwinter Regatta in Cabarete, Puerto Plata over the weekend. 36 sailors from 13 countries were challenged in all possible sailing conditions during the three-day 10th Caribbean Laser Midwinter Regatta held in Cabarete, held 13-15 January.
The organizers said that the first day offered steady 22 knots with big swell, the second day featured crowed pleasers in bay racing with shifty and gusty offshore wind, and the third day offered three races in 6 to 12 knots, with beautiful Caribbean sunshine.
Alsogaray, who this fall had just won the Gold Medal in the Guadalajara Pan-American Games, fought hard to beat Italian Olympic hopeful Michele Regolo, and young Ard Van Aanholt from Curacao surprised everyone by finishing third, ahead of a few Olympic sailors.
In the Radial calls, first place was won by Juanky Perdomo from Puerto Rico, who edged Philipine Van Aanholt from Curacao, and third was Peter Seidenberg from the USA.
The Master category winner is Ari Barshi from the Dominican Republic, who used his local knowledge of the waves downwind to beat Wolfgang Gerz from Germany in the last race.
The event is now followed by the Pre Brisbane Master Worlds clinic, 17-20 January in Cabarete.
