National District mayor Roberto Salcedo has told Diario Libre that the city government is seeking an agreement with the owners of the properties in the Colonial City that have been declared as risks to the public and to their residents, so that they can be moved out. Salcedo told Diario Libre that several different situations exist in the Colonial City, with residents who are neither owners nor tenants, but might be squatters. "We are working with the owners, because we have to reach agreements for the different situations. For example there are private properties that have been taken over by other individuals. We are talking with the owners in order for them to guarantee that in a certain period of time, they will improve the conditions of these residences," said Salcedo.

He stressed that the inhabitants of these dangerous structures, as well as tourists and other citizens "were running a high risk."

Salcedo said that many of these residences, in addition, constitute part of the city's monumental and historic heritage, "so we have to take care of their historical value." He admitted that any remodeling and repair of the properties in question could make it impossible for the current inhabitants or the legal renters to able to return to them.
