Ramon Escalante Florentino and Romelia Darisa Gonzalez have been together for six years, and over last weekend they shared the terror and tragedy of the shipwreck of the Costa Concordia, one of the world's largest cruise ships, off the coast of the island of Giglio, just a few miles from Italy's Tuscan coast. Their story in today's Listin Diario describes the wreck and the chaos of the aftermath as more than 4,000 people attempted to leave the tipping vessel. Romelia, a marine biologist working in Andorra, said she saw mothers throwing babies into lifeboats and described how their cabin attendant and the person he was helping drowned in the rising waters inside the ship.

She said that everything was going well on this long-planned trip, that is, until around 9pm when the ship hit the rocks, and plates and wine bottles and glasses went flying.

She said that the captain restored calm by saying that there was a small problem with the engine. But within nine hours the ship has listed to more than 80 degrees. Darisa and Escalante told Listin Diario they had lost their passports but the Dominican Embassy in Rome did not respond to the many calls they made.
