Several officers and agents of the National Police detachment at Plaza Valerio in the La Joya sector of Santiago have been arrested and placed under investigation in connection with the death of private employee Rafael Orlando Salce Minaya, who died last Saturday after falling down outside the station, as reported in Diario Libre. The agents being investigated by the District Attorney of Santiago include Officer Jose E. Rodriguez Vallejo, the commander of the detachment, First Lieutenant Angel R. Joaquin Monegro, the officer on duty, and non-commissioned officers Sergeant Major Bido Garcia as well as Corporal Tirson Medina Ferreira.

The agents were interrogated for several hours by deputy prosecutors of the judicial district of Santiago, who are in charge of investigations into the case. A preliminary report by the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) says that Rafael Salce died as the result of severe encephalic cranial contusions.

According to the Police, an alleged eyewitness, Custodio Antonio Plasencia, told Justice Department investigators that Salce Minaya supposedly passed out in his presence. Nonetheless, the victim's relatives are claiming that his death was caused by the blows that he received as he fell on the curb in front of the police station after allegedly being pushed by several agents.

Initially the police reported that the death was caused by a fainting spell he suffered when he arrived at the Plaza Valerio police station. Salce Minaya went to the station house to see his son, who had been detained during a police dragnet operation in the sector of La Joya last weekend.
