Last night the Cuban left-hander Raul Valdes pitched perhaps the only nine-inning game of this year's Dominican Winter League Baseball Championship, and he pitched a gem: nine innings, five hits and one run. According to one of the Aguilas players, Valdes was "neither high or low, not inside or out." As a result, the Aguilas Cibaenas came away with a 3-1 victory over the Tigres del Licey and are now tied in second place with the Tigres in the battle to reach the Finals. For the Aguilas, Elian Herrera, Brandon Moss and Carlos Gomez all had good nights at the plate and they accounted for the Aguilas' scoring. In the night's other game, in San Francisco de Macoris, the Leones del Escogido defeated the Gigantes del Cibao by a score of 8-2 and thereby set up just one of several possibilities.
If the Aguilas and Escogido win in tonight's final game of the round-robin portion of the tournament, then the Aguilas will travel to Santo Domingo on Friday to face the Leones del Escogido. However, if the Tigres del Licey defeat the Leones in tonight's game at the Estadio Quisqueya, and the Aguilas defeat the Gigantes in the Julian Javier Stadium in San Francisco de Macoris, then the Tigres and the Aguilas have to play a one game playoff to decide who goes to the final against Escogido. BUT, if the Tigres and Aguilas lose, then there is a triple tie for second place. The team with the highest run average will await the victor of a one-game playoff between the other two teams for another deciding game. These games will have to be played on Wednesday and Thursday.
