Julio V. Brache, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in the Dominican Republic (AMCHAMDR), emphasized the potential for tourism in the Dominican Republic at a meeting in Puerto Plata. US Ambassador Raul Yzaguirre was the keynote speaker at the gathering that took place on 13 January.

Brache shared three pieces of good news: The increase in tourists in the country in 2011, the increase in hotel occupancy in Puerto Plata and the signing of a agreement to construct a cruise port by Carnival, also in Puerto Plata.

Brache said that the country had great tourism potential, which could only be converted into reality with high quality human resources, high levels of customer service, working strategically, worldwide promotion, an innovative offer, improved levels of hygiene and education and being at the forefront in infrastructure. He mentioned that occupancy levels in Puerto Plata have risen from 34% in December to 71.3% so far in January.

He stated that the Dominican Republic as a tourist destination was improving by the day, which would be to everyone's benefit.

Ambassador Yzaguirre called for concerted public and private sector efforts to achieve sustainable goals for the region. He highlighted the recently signed agreement for Carnival to make a US$65 million investment in a port in the west side of the city. The port is scheduled to open in 2013. He said the Carnival deal should be a turning point for the entire region, with the company's capacity to manage thousands of tourists on cruise ships every year. He spoke of tourists spending on average US$90-US$100 in port.

Yzaguirre also highlighted recent investment in infrastructure. He mentioned US$2.5 million being invested in the city's sanitation system, and another US$10 million spent to rebuild the Malecon, and funds for renovating the main boulevard.
