President Leonel Fernandez will inaugurate the Ortega and Gasset n University of Santo Domingo (UASD) tunnel at 5pm today. It will be the fifth roadway, and second tunnel to cross from the north to the south of the city. The tunnel is 1.2 kilometers long and the government says it cost over US$50 million dollars.

The aluminum-clad strips at the side and the roof were described by Public Works as "a work of art". Maximum speed is 50km an hour and 13 video cameras, a ventilation system and smoke detectors are connected to a control center on 27 de Febrero Ave. At some points, the tunnel reaches a depth of 25 meters under buildings in the area. The works were carried out by Brazilian company Odebrecht with financing from the Brazilian export agency. Other public works by Odebrecht in partnership with the Ministry of Public Works are the overpass at the Nunez de Caceres intersection with John F Kennedy Avenue, the Charles de Gaulle Ave. overpass, the open tunnel at Carmen Mendoza de Cornielle and 27 de Febrero Ave, the Jose Ortega y Gasset Ave. overpass, the open tunnel at Nunez de Caceres with 27 de Febrero and the overpass at Dr. Defillo with John F. Kennedy Ave.
