The tunnel linking 27 de Febrero and Jose Contreras avenues was formally inaugurated by President Leonel Fernandez yesterday. His wife, Margarita Cedeno, Public Works Minister Victor Diaz Rua, Ambassador in Brazil Joao Saneiro and representatives of the Brazilian construction company, Odebrecht also attended the ceremony.
The government reports that the tunnel, aimed at improving north-south traffic flow in Santo Domingo, cost US$50 million. The tunnel has two 3.65-meter lanes and reaches a depth of 25 meters at one point. It is 1.2kms long and serves as a continuation of the Ortega y Gasset Avenue. It was designed for speeds of 50kms per hour. It runs under the 27 de Febrero, Mexico, Pedro Henriquez Urena, Cesar Nicolas Penson and Bolivar avenues to reach the Jose Contreras.
Speaking at the event, Public Works Minister Victor Diaz Rua said that the tunnel was planned mainly to ease the congestion at the intersection of the 27 de Febrero and Maximo Gomez avenues.
He also announced Corredor Duarte II that will entail the construction of more infrastructure works to continue to improve traffic flow in the city. These are the tunnels for north-south traffic at 27 February and Maximo Gomez, 27 de Febrero and Winston Churchill and 27 de Febrero and Abraham Lincoln. Others in the west-east direction will include one at the intersection of 27 de Febrero with Caonabo, 27 de Febrero and Privada and Prolongacion 27 de Febrero with Isabel Aguiar.
As part of Corredor Duarte I, Odebrecht has built overpasses and tunnels at John F. Kennedy with Nunez de Caceres, Calle Dr. Defillo, and 27 de Febrero with Defillo and Carmen Mendoza de Cornielle and Charles de Gaulle avenues with the San Isidro Highway. Corredor Duarte I also includes the ongoing overpasses at Duarte and Avenida Monumental and Avenida Manoguayabo.
These public works are financed with loans made to the country by the Brazilian government export bank.
