The Dominican Conference of Bishops, the Catholic Church hierarchy in the Dominican Republic, issued its Pastoral Letter for the upcoming celebration of the feast day of the Patron of the Republic, Our Lady of Altagracia, on 21 January.

The bishops lashed out at the "rampant corruption" and the moral crisis that they said was encrusted in the "national soul", also condemning gender and intra-family violence. The bishops' powerful letter said that while they can understand that the world is experiencing a major economic and financial crisis, they believe that there is also a human and social crisis. They identified the cause of the violence that surrounds us as the increase in violence against women and the family, as well as the low salaries earned by most employees and the precarious basic services. They stated that this has a lot to do with the "mediocrity of many politicians and the rampant corruption." The bishops promised that their voice would continue to be heard urging proper behavior. The Dominican Conference of Bishops was founded in 1962.
