After part of the country was shaken by several tremors last night (including a 5.0 quake at 2:28am), the director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), General Juan Manuel Mendez urged the public to practice evacuating their homes and workplaces in order to prevent panic in the event of a natural disaster.
The 19 January tremors were the second set to be felt in the south of the Dominican Republic in the last three weeks. Listin Diario reports that the first tremor, just 3.4 on the Richter scale was felt in most of the Cibao, mainly in Mao and Esperanza. The 5.0 quake was located south of Saona Island, some 47 kms SSE of La Romana and was felt mostly in the south and southeast. Its depth was reported at 82.6kms.
