Well that was some series! And it isn't over yet. Last night the Aguilas Cibaenas forced a one-game playoff with the Tigres del Licey by defeating the Gigantes del Cibao in the last scheduled game of the round-robin section of the tournament. The game was played in Santo Domingo's Estadio Quisqueya because the continuous rains in the Cibao Valley had made the playing field at San Francisco de Macoris unplayable.
After Monday night's games, there was a possibility of a three-way tie in second place. However, on Tuesday, the Licey team defeated the Leones del Escogido and forced the Aguilas to either win or go home in their rain-delayed game against the Gigantes. Both teams had been playing well, but last night the Aguilas' pitching was excellent, limiting a powerful Gigantes lineup to just one run on ten hits scattered over the nine innings. In the meantime, the Aguilas batters were able to get hits at key moments and score runs. The top of the lineup, Elian Herrera and Joaquin Arias got five hits and scored four runs and the middle of the line up - Hector Luna, Brandon Moss, Miguel Tejada, Jesse Gutierrez and Yoenis Cespedes - drove in the runs. Manager Felix Fermin used six pitchers to keep the Gigantes in check and force tonight's playoff with the Tigres.
The game, to be played in Santiago's Estadio Cibao, has caused a commotion as people rush to get tickets. According to Listin Diario, this is a scalper's paradise.
