Starting today, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) is deploying more than 4,000 people to the eastern region in preparation for Our Lady of Altagracia Day on Saturday. According to COE director General Juan Manuel Mendez, around 60 aid stations have been set up on the roads in the east, 12 on the Duarte and 6 November highways, as well as 30 ambulances posted at key points and a helicopter to cover the whole area. There will be a medical station inside the perimeter of the Basilica in Higuey, with two doctors, a field hospital and a missing persons center, as well as a command post. Our Lady of Altagracia Day is celebrated on 21 January every year. She is the protector of the Dominican people, and thousands make a pilgrimage to Higuey for the occasion.
