The Santo Domingo East city council announced that this year the carnival would take place on Avenida Espana. The carnival route has created controversy between organizers and councilors representing the political parties.

Last year, it took place along Av. Venezuela Avenue and other parts of the Invivienda low cost residential area. Now the sponsors, Presidente Beer and Brugal have chosen instead the sea-front Avenida Espana Avenue as this year's location.

Opponents of the change agree that the boulevard is more suitable for the event, but argue that public lighting is deficient in surrounding areas and the avenue is not served by public transport, making it difficult for large numbers of people to get there.

Santo Domingo East councilors have suggested that buses could be hired on the day of the carnival to bring people in from the neighborhoods to the north and the east of the municipality.

Supporters of holding the carnival in Invivienda say that it is accessible to all neighborhoods and that the residents know the way so they can get there more easily.

Carnival celebrations take place on Sundays in February. www.elcaribe.com.do/2012/01/20/conflicto-por-traslado-del-carnaval-sde-avenida-espana (http://www.elcaribe.com.do/2012/01/20/conflicto-por-traslado-del-carnaval-sde-avenida-espana)
