The pedestrian bridge at kilometer 20 of the Las Americas highway is at risk of collapsing due to salt damage and lack of maintenance. The stairs and the floor of the bridge are rusty and the handrails are becoming loose, as they are being eaten away due to the effects of rain and the proximity to the sea.
The modern bridge, one of the few crossing the dangerous highway, was inaugurated during Hipolito Mejia's government in 2004. The metal supports along the length of the bridge are beginning to fall off, putting users of the bridge at risk.
There are three pedestrian bridges to get to the airport and are all rusting due to inadequate maintenance.
In the roadside rest stop, Parador del Mar, in the center of the highway, there is a gasoline station and a beautiful marine sculpture, which has also lost its beauty because of a lack of maintenance by the Ministry of Public Works, reports the newspaper that has been covering the neglect of the Santo Domingo coastal Parque Litoral Sur, a national park. The thoroughfare that follows the coastal park begins as the Autopista 30 de Mayo, becomes midway the Malecon (Av. George Washington) and continues east as the Las Americas Expressway.
