The Ministry of Foreign Relations said yesterday that it would finance the return of three sailors, Candido Maximo Rois Quezada, Pedro Jose Henriquez and Alexis Hernandez, acquitted by Venezuelan courts after spending ten months in prison accused of entering Venezuelan waters illegally. They are expected to fly to the Dominican Republic shortly.

The Dominican sailors were crewmembers of a boat that entered Venezuelan waters last April damaging a platform belonging to the Venezuelan State Petroleum company (PDVSA). They were jailed until last Monday when they were released by the Venezuelan authorities.

Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso said the government purchased the return flights to assist the men who were not responsible for the situation and did not have the money to return. He said the men had spent 10 months at the Carupano jail during which they received humanitarian assistance from the Dominican mission in Venezuela that followed their case.
