Police officers attached to the Department of Migration Control and Investigation of the Trade in and Traffic of People arrested Eufemia Santiago Abreu yesterday. She is accused of illegal trafficking of people to several countries in Europe and to the United States. She was also accused of falsifying documents and swindling several people to whom she offered journeys to Spain and Italy.

Her victims included Santa Lucrecia Arnaud Santos, to whom she promised a legal visa to travel to Europe, specifically Spain, and then swindled her out of RD$100,000.

The police said that the arrested woman had a passport in her name, five airline tickets from Atlantic Travel, a cell phone and two receipts from the Migration Department, as well as a customs form for outgoing and incoming passengers in the name of Santa Lucrecia and various forged invitation letters to solicit visas from the Canadian embassy.

They said that this was not her first offence, as she had already been convicted for illegal traffic of people to Europe, swindling RD$250,000 from one person promising to get a visa to travel to the US.
