According to a source associated with the Public Prosecution office, ex-police lieutenant Fernando de los Santos, known as "La Soga", accused of murder and other crimes, has escaped to Haiti where he is being protected by, and supposedly working for, a famous Haitian drug trafficker with whom he has strong ties, as reported in Diario Libre.
The drug trafficker is one of the most feared men in Haiti, with a number of properties and killers at his service. He lives in the Haitian border town of Ouanaminthe, where he is supposedly operating a network that steals vehicles in the Dominican Republic and delivers them to Haiti.
However, there are another two versions about the whereabouts of the former police officer, who deserted several months ago after the Public Prosecutor in Santiago ordered his arrest.
One version is that he was murdered and then thrown into the Atlantic Ocean by persons unknown, and another version is that he is hiding out in the south of the country where he is being protected by relatives.
When interviewed Santiago Public Prosecutor Luisa Eridania Liranzo Sanchez told Diario Libre that the case was still open, and, yesterday Interpol said that they have issued an international warrant for his capture and distributed his photograph to the 189 member countries to aid with his capture wherever he is located.
In his 20 years of service, "La Soga" headed up a squad called "The Team", that executed supposed criminals who were being hunted by the police.
Certain police sources attribute at least 30 extrajudicial killings to "La Soga", but as investigations continue, new information is beginning to emerge. The most recent crime he is said to have carried out was the execution of two young men in the Ensanche Libertad sector of Santiago, with the bodies of both men, hands and feet tied up, were found in the dam at Bao.
