The Ministry of Foreign Relations reports that Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso met with his United Kingdom counterpart, UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs William Hague in Grenada, and they both agreed to draft a strategic alliance that would drive a broad agenda in the areas of bilateral trade, investment, security and climate change, using the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the Caribbean and the European Union as a framework.

The alliance was agreed during a private meeting between Carlos Morales Troncoso and William Hague. The Ministry of Foreign Relations described the meeting as one of historic importance in the relations of both countries.

As reported in Listin Diario, Morales Troncoso and Hague met privately before the start of the 7th UK-Caribbean Ministerial Forum (Sustainable Growth Towards Prosperity) in St. Georges, Grenada from 22-23 January. During the meetings, a 31-point Action Plan was agreed to.

"It was a meeting of great significance, unprecedented for the United Kingdom and highlighted the importance of the Dominican Republic as a UK ally in the Caribbean," said Morales Troncoso.

Morales said that Hague spoke of a new era of relations between the UK and the Cariforum countries, with an interest in working together at the same level to solve problems. Caribbean nations seek the removal of the long-haul air travel tax that has made travel very expensive to the region from the UK.

As reported, Morales Troncoso and Hague addressed trade issues as well as Dominican relations with Haiti. The UK minister said that they would use the platform of the DR to assist Haiti. They also reviewed what was described as a "complicated" international agenda, and concurred to both seek a conciliatory role in the situation in the Middle East.

Following the meeting, Caridom Secretariat reported that the Caribbean is to receive ?75 million (US$116.5 million) in development projects from the United Kingdom over four years to help with job-creation, improve security, and combat the threat posed by natural disasters and climate change. He said the funds represent a considerable increase on previous aid budgets and signal the strong commitment to the region.

The Dominican ambassador in London, Federico Cuello Camilo, Deputy Minister of Foreign Relations in charge of Trade Relations Cesar Dargam and the director of the Commission for Climate Change, Omar Ramirez also attended the meeting.
