Dominican consumers run up less debt compared to their counterparts in Latin American countries. According to visiting Visa executive vice president Jose Maria Ayuso, there are more debit cards in use than credit cards in the DR. Ayuso says that the market is growing with more use of the pre-paid gas cards, debit cards and credit cards.

According to the Dominican Republic Commercial Banks Association (ABA), there are 1.8 million credit card holders in 2010, up from 1.2 million in 2008.

Visa card transactions in the DR totaled US$3 billion, compared to US$4 billion in Puerto Rico, as reported in Listin Diario.

Ayuso used the indicator of growth of credit card usage in Latin America as proof that there is not a single country in recession in the area. He mentioned that card use was on the increase: 4.5% in Brazil, 5.5% in Colombia and 5% in the Dominican Republic.
