Prevention efforts and monitoring of known criminals has resulted in a 26% decline in homicides and crime in Santo Domingo from January to November, according to the National Police statistics department. According to their figures, violent deaths were down 20%, with 287 homicides, 63 less than the 350 for the same period in 2010. The Police reports that crime is down 20%, social unrest 36% and deaths during criminal pursuit were down 41%, as reported in Listin Diario. The department reports that in November alone, deaths declined from 35 last year to 20 this year.
