On Monday, 23 January an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale, according to preliminary data from the UASD Seismological Institute, and 5.1 according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), revived fears in the population yesterday and caused evacuations from several buildings in the National District.

The quake occurred at 4:50 in the afternoon and the epicenter was located at 19.573 N and 70.073 W, to the southeast of Rio San Juan, in Maria Trinidad Sanchez province. According to local reports, the quake was seven kilometers deep and was felt in a large part of the north of the country, in Greater Santo Domingo and in the east.

Civil Defense reported cracks in five houses and in the Mantina Villa and La Hoja schools in the town of Gaspar Hernandez in the province of Espaillat. In Rio San Juan four houses suffered cracks as well as the Fire Station and the Buenos Aires schoolhouse.

This is the third earthquake measuring more than 5 on the Richter scale in the country this month. The first one occurred on 5 January with a magnitude of 5.3, followed by another of 4.8. On 19 January there was another one of equal intensity.

Then a fourth earthquake, reportedly measuring 4.5 was felt at 10:34am on Tuesday. There have been no reports of damage or personal injuries. San Francisco de Macoris was the nearest city to the epicenter of both quakes, according to USGS, the United States Geology Survey.

Tuesday's quake was located 37km (22 miles) NNE of San Francisco de Macoris, D.R.

68km (42 miles) ENE of Santiago, Dominican Republic

125km (77 miles) N of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

The earthquake's epicenter was in the northeast, with the closest large city being San Francisco de Macoris.
