The only way to improve pedestrian safety, according to Metropolitan Transit Authority (AMET) commander Major General Jose Anibal Sanz Jiminian, is to educate both pedestrians and drivers on the need to give way to each other. General Sanz Jiminian said it was a shame that schools did not teach such basic safety precautions as they do in other countries. He told El Caribe reporters that drivers have to respect pedestrians, but that pedestrians also have to learn to cross at intersections and not in the middle of blocks. The general welcomed the "Give way" campaign launched by El Caribe newspaper this week as a positive step in the right direction.
