A former legislator and current employee of the Center for Development and Industrial Competitiveness (Proindustria) says that the high number of accidents and victims on the Dominican streets and highways are caused by a failure to observe the laws on speed, alcohol and drug consumption and the distractions caused by using cell phones while driving.

Since 2000, there have been over 4,000 traffic accident fatalities in the Dominican Republic, and nearly 12,000 people have been injured. In 2010 there were over 2,300 fatalities in traffic-related incidents, according to a study by the French government and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology. Fausto Araujo, a former legislator and author of Law 143-11 that prohibits the use of cell phones while driving, said that studies in the US state of Oklahoma showed that 65% of traffic accidents there occurred when a driver was using a cell phone behind the wheel.

A recent US poll indicated that 90% of Americans surveyed thought cell-phone use behind the wheel is dangerous but 80% said they did it anyway. "Using a cell phone while driving is like any addictive behavior. We know it could be detrimental but we do it against our own best interests", reports Tulsa World.
