At a press conference yesterday, nine PRD deputies called on Miguel Vargas to join former President Hipolito Mejia's campaign or stand down from the presidency of the PRD party. Miguel Vargas Maldonado was Hipolito Mejia's main rival for the PRD presidential candidate and has yet to join the PRD presidential campaign.

PRD congressional deputies Alexis Jimenez, Bernardo Aleman, Elpidio Infante, Esther Minyety, Evangelina Sosa, Eugenio Cedeno, Juan Jose Morales, Pablo Adon and Cristina Encarnacion called on Vargas Maldonado to call a meeting of the PRD National Executive Committee (CEN) to clear up the doubts as to whether or not he was supporting Mejia and to grant full powers to Mejia as the PRD presidential candidate.

They reminded Vargas Maldonado that he had become the president of the PRD under the premise that "the candidate and the president should speak and act as one". They stated that the ideal situation was for Vargas Maldonado to join the campaign, and that standing down should be the last resort.

Their letter said: "We the undersigned, in the belief that standing down should be the last option, we appeal to his social conscience, political and ideological conduct, also his obligation to history, the PRD militancy and the Dominican people who are submerged in poverty and demand a better country for everyone."
