Today is the day to fly flags and public school children nationwide will lay flowers at the statue of Juan Pablo Duarte in the local parks. President Leonel Fernandez will head a delegation of government dignitaries in San Francisco de Macoris and watch a military parade. Some schools, such as the Estados Unidos High School in the National District, have painted murals highlighting the life and times of Duarte. Others have made dioramas, staged plays and held essay contests. Many of the students interviewed by Listin Diario said that they were excited about learning about the Founding Father of the Dominican Republic and interested in learning more. Juan Pablo Duarte headed the Dominican independence movement during the 1840s, which led to the 27 February uprising that ended in the eventual independence of the eastern part of Hispaniola from the western nation of Haiti.
