According to the head of the Transport Reorganization Office (OPRET), Diandino Pena, the second line of the Santo Domingo Metro will cost US$830 million and a test run is on the cards for this month. President Leonel Fernandez has promised to ride the metro on 27 February.

According to Pena, the President will ride the Metro from the Centro de los Heroes to John F. Kennedy and Maximo Gomez, and there he will take the Metro 2 train to Kilometer 9 of the Duarte Highway and Luperon Avenue. On the return trip, Fernandez will go to the station on Padre Castellanos.

The new Metro Line will eventually have nine stations, of which seven are ready, including one linking the 1 and 2 lines at John F Kennedy and Maximo Gomez.

Given recent seismological events, Pena told the press that the largest government project in the Dominican Republic's history, the Santo Domingo Metro, has been built to resist earthquakes. According to El Nuevo Diario, the Opret manager said that passenger flow had not diminished as a result of the recent tremors.
