Vaccination drives and prevention efforts have paid off. Yesterday, Virgen Gomez of the national health audit commission announced that the DR is free of measles and rubella (German measles). As reported in Diario Libre, Gomez said that vaccination coverage of preventable diseases is now at 95% of the population. The last case of rubella was reported in 2007 and the last case of measles in 2001. She said that there were two cases of measles last year, although the disease was imported by French and Italian tourists. There were no complications.

Gomez advocates for a new law that would guarantee a budget to maintain the vaccination programs, increase coverage and coordinate with the tourism sector to require that hotels require vaccination cards for their employees. The bill has the support of Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez.

The results of the study that confirmed that measles and rubella had been eradicated were presented to Liliam Reneau-Vernon, representative of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in the Dominican Republic.
