The Dominican League Against Cancer defended the work being carried out by the Dr. Heriberto Pieter Oncological Institute. The Institute treats thousands of patients from all over the country, mainly people from the lowest income brackets. The League fears that the institute's management style might be changed in a possible shared management situation in the new oncological hospital being built on the grounds of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo.
According to Hoy newspaper, one of the League directors, Jesus Troncoco Ferrua, said that "our hospital and the League have worked together very well over decades and we have had not been influenced by politics or of anything else among the directors..." He added: "I have to say that we have doubts that this will continue functioning like it has been up to now."
The Dominican League Against Cancer receives 1.3 million pesos from the government and pays the salary of 60 of the 130 doctors who work at the Institute.
