Surveys of schools and other public buildings by the National Office of Evaluation of Seismological Vulnerability, have found that a total of 32 schools, 24 in Nagua, and 8 in Sanchez, in the province of Samana, suffered damage after the 5.1 earthquake on Monday.
Although the school officials are ringing the school bells, only a few students have been attending classes. Minerva Santos, the head of Nagua's Civil Defense office, said that most of the cracks are small but no matter what, they will heed the recommendations of the engineers, once they finish their inspections. The chief of the Nagua Fire Department said that he was worried about the damage suffered to the firehouse, which was built in 1980, since further tremors might bring the building down. An article in Listin Diario said that the worst affected school was the Eliseo Grullon where thousands of children from poor families attend classes.
