The five largest private employers that contribute to the Social Security System had, all together, 37,163 employees in 2011, which represents an increase of 8,681 employees compared to 2010, when there were 28,481 workers. According to figures from the Social Security Treasury report for 2011, the Ramos Group became the largest private employer, going from fifth to third place on the list of the 14 largest employers, which includes the Ministry of Education with 106,691 employees and the Ministry of Public Health with 57,542.
The Ramos Group, with the opening of the new Multi-Centers in Bonao, Higuey and the National District, has become one of the biggest employers in the country. They currently operate 18 Multi-Centers "La Sirena" and four Pola Supermarkets, and receive a total of around 36 million visits a year. The Ramos Group is also planning to open a Multi-Center in Bani and another on Independencia Avenue in the National District.

In third place, according to the list, is the Mutual Association of Solidarity Services, which is a sort of virtual manager that includes in its group workers from the informal sector, with 7,202, and in reality, these are not private employees (in the formal sense). In fourth place is Centro Cuesta Nacional, another of the country's large commercial chains, which includes the Jumbo and El Nacional supermarkets, with 6,458 employees. The fifth spot is held by the Banco Popular, which employs 6,059 people.
In the public sector, which employed 211,386 workers last year, the largest employer is the Ministry of Education, followed by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, the Dominican Social Security Institute with 9,012 employees, the Ministry of Agriculture with 8,556, the Banco de Reservas with 7,374, and the Ministry of Public Works with 6,534 employees.
