A few hours after a group of deputies from the PRD asked party president Miguel Vargas Maldonado to take a leave of absence, the party's presidential candidate, Hipolito Mejia and 42 legislators came out in defense of MVM and called on the party leadership to avoid being distracted by the opposition's strategies. Mejia acknowledged that the institutional work by the party authorities, headed by Vargas Maldonado, was very positive. He said: "These actions have been developing in a positive manner, all together, in the latest union elections, as well as in the work that is being carried out day to day before the Central Electoral Board and in the organization and staging of the convention process for the selection of the candidates for the overseas deputies."

Diario Libre said that added to this glowing recognition, Mejia was joined by 42 legislators who belong to the faction led by Vargas Maldonado, and they demanded respect for the decision adopted by Vargas Maldonado to support the campaign through his duties as president of the organization. They warned that their colleagues' proposal to take the talk about an eventual leave of absence to the National Executive Committee would pose a threat to party institutionalism. Commenting on the situation, PRD general secretary Orlando Jorge Mera said that the request was poorly timed and beyond the political reality of the organization. He said that it was not included among the reasons for calling a meeting of the National Executive Committee.
