The Constitutional Court met last night during a ceremony attended by the President, Leonel Fernandez in the main hall of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).

Milton Ray Guevara, the president of the court, emphasized the responsibility, importance and the magnitude of the new judges as well as the challenges ahead for the court.

He said that the essence of the court was to guarantee that the Constitution upheld its position at the top of the pyramid of justice by respecting rights, and that each of the state organizations should exercise its function within the guidelines established by the Constitution.

He stated that the court should resolve conflicts between state bodies, while ensuring the Constitution is adhered to in international deals and should also be responsible for reviewing decisions issued by the courts.

As well as the 13 members of the Constitutional Court, the attendees included the rector of the UASD, PRD president Miguel Vargas, Senate president Reinaldo Pared Perez and members of the PRSC party and the government.
