Yesterday was the 199th anniversary of the birth of Juan Pablo Duarte, and the Senate published a communication marking the occasion in various newspapers. However, instead of commemorating the birth of Duarte, the communication stated it was the anniversary of his death. This generated a flood of complaints in the media and across the social networks.

Critics were quick to point out that the blunder committed by the Senate demonstrated the lack of education in the country and the need to spend 4% of the Gross Domestic Product on education, as established by the Dominican constitution, which has never happened.

The Senate president, Reinaldo Pared, who signed the statement about Duarte, faced the critics and apologized for the accidental mistake.

He said, "Thank you for calling this error to our attention, for which I once again apologize." Juan Pablo Duarte was born in Santo Domingo on the 26 January 1813 and died in Venezuela in 1876.
