Writer and film critic Armando Almanzar Rodriguez has won the National Literature Prize for 2012, awarded by the Corripio Foundation and the Culture Ministry. He received a commemorative scroll and a million pesos, and was selected not only for his literary work, but also for his journalism and humorous storytelling. His writing was described as out of the ordinary and almost unique within Dominican literature.

The Corripio Foundation said that his writing uses colloquial and very colorful language, creating interesting characters and dealing with real issues.

Almanzar, who was born in Santo Domingo on 22 May 1935, studied law at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), but his passion for cinema led him to abandon his legal career.

The jury was made up of Culture Minister Jose Rafael Lantigua, the executive director of the Corripio Foundation, UASD Rector Mateo Aquino Febrillet, PUCMM Rector Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado, UNPHU Rector Miguel R. Fiallo, UCSD Rector Reverend Ramon Alonso, UCE Rector Jose Hazim Frappier and Rolando M. Guzman INTEC.
