The Dominican Republic and Haiti could be at serious risk from devastating earthquakes if the seismic pattern detected by a group of American scientists repeats itself.

Having analyzed all of the seismic data since colonial times, the investigators have concluded that the 2010 earthquake in Haiti could mark the beginning of a new cycle of large quakes in the Enriquillo fault system, which after been quiet for 240 years now appears to be active again, as evidenced by the 2010 Haitian quake. There was a similar pattern in 1701 that started with a quake of 6.6-magnitude.

Bakun, emeritus scientist with the Center for the Science of Earthquakes at the American Geophysical Institute (US Geological Survey) warned that Haiti and the Dominican Republic should prepare themselves for future devastating earthquakes along the whole Enriquillo fault system, located in the south of Hispaniola. He said that although the Haitian quake was not a large seismic event, it caused considerable damage and loss of life due to inadequate construction practices and said that the mitigation of seismic risk in both countries should be strengthened in order to prevent destruction on this scale due to future earthquakes

According to the Emergency Operations Center (COE), last night at 9.25 there was an earthquake of 3.9 on the Richter scale some 20 kilometers south east of Nagua at a depth of one kilometer.
