The Leones del Escogido won the Dominican Winter League Professional Baseball Championship after a dramatic nine-game final playoff series that ended last night. The Leones won the final game in the final inning 6-5 with a walk-off single by Andy Dirk, who drove in Freddy Guzman from third base. The opposing Aguilas Cibaenas, a team that had staged what seemed like a miraculous comeback, went into the eighth inning with a 4-2 lead but they could just not hang on.

The Leones scored three times in the bottom of the eighth inning and took a one-run lead into the ninth inning. With two outs, one a controversial out at first base, and a 3-2 count on Jesse Gutierrez, the young Dominican fielder hit a dramatic homerun over the left field fence to tie the game at 5-5. However, the Aguilas relief pitchers could not stop the Leones who got three hits in the bottom half of the inning to win their 14th Dominican Winter League Championship pennant and earn the right to represent the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series.

The Caribbean Series opens in Santo Domingo on Thursday, 2 February at the Quisqueya Ball Park and brings together the champion teams from Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
