La Canela Industrial Park (PILCA) in the municipal district of La Canela in the province of Santiago, inaugurated by the government over a year ago, remains closed. The project was conceived as a way of reducing unemployment in the southern part of the province and to get the economy moving in the town. This project was inaugurated on 31 August 2010 by the Center for Development and Industrial Competitiveness (Pro Industria) with the support of the Endowment Fund of the Reformed Companies (Fomper) at a cost of RD$86 million.

However, there is still hope locally that it will open soon. Pro Industria Associated Projects and Businesses manager, Jose Manuel Checo, had reported that the park would be functioning in December 2011. The installations would contain a cluster of producers and processors of coffee and cacao, furniture, mattresses and similar, as well as automotive sector businesses, metalworking and textiles.

It was announced that PILCA would provide the Santiago economy with 8,160 new jobs in the first phase, while in the second phase it would provide 16,000 more jobs. In the first phase the park was to consist of 69 small and medium businesses in several production categories, divided into five clusters. The new buildings are located within an area of 14,027m2 and there are nine industrial buildings ready to house the associated groups.
