A week after they went missing at sea, two fishermen from Sabana de la Mar were found in Haiti, alive, dehydrated but safe. Both men were forced to eat raw fish and drink salt water to survive while they were lost at sea. Julio Brito and Jose Ramon Berges Espinal, who both live in Sabana de la Mar were found on the coast of Haiti and taken by ground transport to the Dominican Republic.

The fishermen, who are also scuba divers, had been heading to the Navidad Banks, some 45 knots west of Samana in the direction of Puerto Plata. Their small boat capsized while laden with fish after a successful day at sea.

They said they could see some of their rescuers but they did not have any way of communicating with them.

When they were found by Haitian fishermen off the north coast of Haiti, they were well treated and taken ashore where they were able to communicate with their families.
