The long weekend brought the traffic fatality toll to four and dozens of people injured. The worst accidents occurred in Higuey, on the Jarabacoa-La Vega highway and in San Pedro de Macoris. One victim was a 10-year old girl who was struck by an SUV on the Autovia del Este between San Pedro de Macoris and La Romana. The newspapers are reporting different figures for the Caribe Tours bus accident on the Jarabacoa-La Vega highway. The only fatality was the bus driver, Julio Lugo, who was trapped in the wreckage for three hours and died on his way to the local hospital.
