According to most of the newspapers, an aircraft that was apparently known to the DNCD went down in the Enriquillo area, killing its pilots. Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo was supervising the collection of evidence for further examination by personnel from the National Forensic Science Institute. One of the questions is whether or not the airplane burned upon crashing or whether it was set on fire after the cargo was removed. One source said that this accident did not happen recently.

The latest reports from the DNCD, released late yesterday afternoon, said that the aircraft did indeed crash and burn, and that it was carrying cocaine. The plane crashed at Loma de la Jaiba between Enriquillo and Paraiso, near a clandestine landing strip known as Sabana de Los Candelones.

Rosado Mateo said that the very same airplane had been pursued in March 2010 but it fled towards Haiti. Six men who had been waiting for it to land were arrested and sent to trial, and subsequently released.

Rosado Mateo said that one of the men, Norberto Felipe Fernandez Olivo, was later caught with 78 kilos of cocaine in Santiago.
