The Chinese community in the Dominican Republic celebrated the arrival of the Year of the Dragon with parades and fireworks and "Dragon Dances" in the streets of Santo Domingo's Chinatown district over the weekend. The celebrations will continue until 7 February, according to Su King Fung, the president of the Chinese Colony Center. The customs surrounding the New Year celebrations include the "red envelope", which traditionally contains a small amount of money and the Yu fish, which symbolizes prosperity. The Wu Shi or Lion Dance and the Wu Long, the Dragon Dance are used to scare off evil spirits.
