Yesterday the government began to pay retirement benefits to more than 3,000 retired teachers at a ceremony led by Vice President Rafael Alburquerque, together with Minister of the Presidency Cesar Pina Toribio, Education Minister Josefina Pimentel and the director of the National Institute of Teachers Welfare (INABIMA), Maritza Rossi.

At the event at the Presidential Palace, the Vice President handed over the first five checks to retired teachers Minerva Pared Lopez, Mercedes Altagracia Toribio, Mingomio Altagracia Herrera, Milagros Montes de Oca and Rosa Maria Paulino, the latter with 45 years of teaching service.

The payments began with more than 81 million pesos distributed amongst the first group of 323 retired teachers with the longest service.

The Education Minister said that 31 January would be remembered as the day that the first group of teachers received the Complementary Retirement Plan, "for the first time in the country's education history". She emphasized that the plan would benefit all teachers who stayed in the education system until retirement and said that it had succeeded due to the efforts of the education community and President Leonel Fernandez, by means of Law 451-08.

INABIMA is in charge of creating a Complementary Retirement Plan so that when teachers retire they will receive an amount equivalent to a 20th of the salary they received as a teacher during their last twenty years of work.

Minerva Baret Lopez gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the teachers, highlighting the support of President Fernandez. The funding for the plan comes from 1.5 percent of the teachers' wages and 2 percent from the employer.
