Dozens of young people belonging to the National Network of Youth Action demanded yesterday that Dominican youth, together with all of society, needed to be more involved in change in the Dominican Republic.

Young people from all over the country were taking part in the Second Youth Congress. Whilst laying a wreath on the tombs of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic, they demanded the construction of, "A New Political Culture".

They stated that they rejected the silence, the impunity and the complicity of the government and judicial authorities in the face of rampant corruption within the public and private sectors, which was limiting economic and social development in this country, and keeping it immersed in poverty and ignorance.

The young people explained that their motivation came from the situation today, which was the same as yesterday, with 42% of the country affected by poverty and 8% of Dominican children suffering from delayed mental and physical development due to lack of nourishment.

Network coordinator Jose Luis Morillo said that they did not want to repeat the errors of the past, nor copy an overseas model, but to construct their own model by means of a properly thought through process and the debate of ideas. They proposed the development of solutions for cleaning up the country and creating a fairer society, based on the vision of Juan Pablo Duarte and the Trinitarios 1844 independence movement.
