Spanish police have detained 38 people thought to be involved in a plot that organizes fraudulent marriages with Dominican women, in order to legalize their status. The women were reportedly working as prostitutes in Catalonia in northeastern Spain.
The investigation started in September 2010, in coordination with the public prosecutor in the Spanish city of Sabadell, and gathered steam after having discovered payments of up to EUR3,500 made to Spaniards for marrying illegal foreigners.
The police have been able to trace 29 such marriages in four parishes in Sabadell. Those detained have been charged with crimes of falsifying documentation, perjury and the violation of workers' rights.
The police ascertained that most of the marriages took place in cases when the foreigner was in Spain illegally. Investigations revealed that some of the bridegrooms actually had other partners and the same witnesses at different ceremonies.
According to the police, most of the Spaniards who were paid to undertake a marriage of convenience or be a witness were experiencing serious economic problems, drug dependency or compulsive gambling. All are awaiting trial.
