A former legislator from Puerto Rico, Ivan Rodriguez Traverzo, who is accused of corruption, was arrested in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico on Tuesday afternoon. According to sources at El Nueva Dia, from the time when the judge Yzdel Ramos issued an arrest warrant on Friday, Federal Agents collaborated with state authorities and confirmed that Rodriguez Traverzo was in Puerto Rico and not in the Dominican Republic.
Rodriguez Traverzo maintained that that he had been in the Dominican Republic since last Friday, then back in Puerto Rico, before returning to the Dominican Republic.
However, the authorities immediately confirmed that there was no record of him leaving Puerto Rico or entering the Dominican Republic or Orlando, Florida.
He is accused of illegally using public funds for personal benefit and violations of the government ethics law. According to the media in Puerto Rico, if found guilty he will face three and a half years in prison for each of the eight charges, totaling more than 26 years. He was released on bail of US$500,000.
His lawyer said that the arrest was a shameful and unnecessary act carried out on the whim of the Police Superintendent, and stated that his client was staying strong and calm at all times.
