Two ex-wives of former PRD senator for the National District, Tonty Rutinel have come forth to defend him. He faces serious charges for gender violence. Leidy Caraballo, a woman with whom he reportedly had a relationship for eight years and has a two-year old son with her, accuses him of causing an injury that required 12 stitches on her forehead. Rutinel says the injury was of more than two stitches. At the preliminary hearing for the case in court yesterday Caraballo said that he punched her and she fell, causing the injury. The case will be heard on 22 February. While gender violence is not unusual, what was unusual in this case was that Rutinel, in protest against the charges, refused to post bail and leave the jail, claiming he was a victim of extortion by the woman and her lawyers. Rutinel has also had the support of his present wife, and Caraballo's father, Jovanny Caraballo.
