The United States Government should "take on a greater responsibility" in the fight against drugs and increase the resources aimed at fighting this problem in the Caribbean, said yesterday the Dominican ambassador to the United States, Anibal de Castro. "We see the fight against drug trafficking as a shared responsibility... and we cannot forget that the final destination of most of the drugs is the United States, as the principal market," said the diplomat before going into a Senate hearing on the fight against drugs in the Caribbean.

According to De Castro, "what is needed is a lot more resources and we should be equal when it comes to receiving these resources." He said that the Dominican Republic was attending the hearings as a way to try and get the Senate to accept that our anti-drug resources are not abundant, "and they represent a great sacrifice for us because we are diverting them from other needs," said De Castro.

Listin Diario said that Dominican authorities had detected the presence of the Sinaloa drug cartel in the north of the DR, and ambassador De Castro told the Senate hearing that a Mexican named Luis Fernando Bertolucci Sastillo had confessed after his capture that the Sinaloa cartel is trying to "create a route to Europe through the Dominican Republic."
