Trade between the Dominican Republic and Cuba grew by 45% last year reaching US$61.36 million, but the government seeks to increase it to US$700 million.

With this objective in mind, a group of business representatives, Dominican government officials and members of the Cuban Embassy will be visiting Cuba until 12 February to promote business, investment and scientific cooperation as well as to improve diplomatic relations. The mission is headed by the director of the Dominican Republic Center for Export and Investment (CEI-RD), Eddy Martinez Manzueta.

In a press release, Martinez said that the main areas to be discussed include the export of fertilizers, food for livestock, vehicles and spare parts, construction materials, paints and varnishes, beauty and personal care products, and plastics.

The main areas of interest for investment are tourism, health, construction, agriculture, and banking and finance.

Martinez reiterated that the challenge is for the Dominican Republic and Cuba to have trade which reaches more than US$700 million and that both countries could maximize the growing potential of Latin American countries.
