On Saturday February 4, the National Drug Control Department (DNCD) dismantled a drug network operating out of San Pedro de Macoris and apparently directed by a doctor who recruited mules to send drugs to the US.

Doctor Joaquin Alfredo Figueroa Paulino and Miguel Antonio Tavarez were arrested by the DNCD and a public prosecutor, in possession of around two kilos of heroin.

A DNCD spokesman said the heroin was found in Figueroa Paulino's home, including 15 bags ready to be ingested by mules to take abroad, probably to New York.

He said that Tavarez was arrested first with just over 200 grams of heroin and told the officers it belonged to Dr. Figueroa Paulino, so the officers went to his house.

The spokesman stated that Tavarez had been in the hands of the DNCD twice before - in July 2000 and in February 2002 - for drug distribution and sale. He said that more arrests would be made, especially their contacts in New York and Puerto Rico.

Figueroa Paulino was arrested for the first time on 14 June 2000 together with his relative Javier Ortiz, with just over two kilos of heroin. Ortiz was jailed for four years for this case, but it appears that the doctor continued with his drug trafficking activities.

The DNCD spokesman said that they would continue to work together with the public prosecutors to find the other suspects in the network, and in the meantime those arrested would be handed over to the Public Prosecutor's office where they would request remand.
