While several official organizations, academics and international agencies have been investigating the reasons why Lake Enriquillo has been rising for some years, the university Professor Luis Mejia has focused on applying existing technology to solve the problem.

In 1984 Lake Enriquillo covered an area of around 276km2, which had reduced to 165km2 in 2004, but in 2009 increased to 333km2. This increase in water levels has threatened several families, taking over thousands of tareas of land and the agriculture from which they made a living.

Mejia, who is a research Professor in the engineering faculty at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, (UASD), thinks that the best solution is not to move those affected, which would be very expensive, although this is what the local authorities are planning to do, but to stop the lake rising and let it return to its natural level.

He has therefore suggested constructing a desalination plant to lower the level of the water and at the same time generate energy, water for agriculture and also produce salt, which could be sold. He thinks that the problem is that the water can only leave the lake by means of evaporation, and therefore has taken samples of the lake to determine the level of salt.

He said that while he realized that the state would have to invest in constructing the desalination plant, the main benefit of this plan would be that the residents would not have to move and the other benefits are collateral.
